Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is a good location to spend a day for families with children as it offers a good mix of fun and education for kids at the zoo. Elders will also enjoy the company of animals. Named after the former prime minister of India Shri Indira Gandhi, the zoological park is located in the Kambalakonda Reserve Forest in Vizag. The park is located in the lap of eastern ghats will hills on one side and Ocean on the other side.
The park spreads on 635 acres of land and the environment of displaying animals and birds simulates natural enclosures. The Zoo hosts nearly eighty species totalling to about 800 animals present in the zoo. The layout is well planned into sections of Primates, carnivores,lesser carnivores, small mammals, reptiles, ungulates and birds.
Primates comprises of monkeys namely Langur, Rhesus, Bonnet, Mandrills, Olive Baboons and sacred baboons.
The carnivores section contains Panthers, Tigers, Lions,Pumas and Jaguars.
The lesser carnivores like wolves, jackals, Hyenas and wild dogs are in a separate section.
The Himalayan black bear and sloth bear are housed in large moated enclosures.
The Hippopotamus is a special attraction at the zoo.
The Crocodile complex has all the three Indian Crocodile species.
The Reptiles section has Pythons, snakes, Land Tortoises, Terrapins, Water Monitor Lizards, Monitor Lizards etc.
Herbivores sections hosts Elephant, Bison, Sambar, Spotted Deeer and Thamin Deer.
A large variety of birds also attracts visitors to this park. There are Grey and Rosy Pelicans, Pied Horn Bills, painted Storks, Peacocks, Ducks, love birds, Budgerigars and Cockateels.
The zoo authorities operate a train with in the premiss.
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is located at about 11 kms from Vizag Railway station on the national highway Vizinagaram
There are number of buses operated by State transport that operate from Vizag city centre to Zoo. Any bus heading to Madhurawada, a prominent suburb of Vizag will go via the Zoo.
Visitors coming in their own vehicles can drive into the zoo by paying for entrance fee for the vehicle.
