Mangamaripeta is a nice beach located at about 16 kms from Vizag. Mangamaripeta beach serves are the promotional center of Buddhism. Thotlakonda , a hill embracing a Buddhist complex is located at an elevation of 128 meters above the ground. This complex was discovered by an aerial survey conducted by the Indian Navy. The excavation of the place was done during years 1988 to 1992. This complex was active between year 200 BC and 200 AD.
Thotlakonda was under the rule of Kalinga kingdom which was key in promoting Buddhism to Sri Lanka and Burma. The Meditation halls were designed to protect Monks from Outside disturbances with stupas at the center and guards at the entrance of the hall. The facilities in the location gives a impression on the simplicity of the life style of the monks.
Monks were visiting this Buddhist school from far places like China, Burma and other countries. They came through the sea route and used to stay here for months and years to complete their study.
The complex has many archaeological findings during the survey. The complex has a number of stupas, chaityas and viharas. There are a number of tubs to hold water in this location. There are into total 12 tubs used for drinking water. Out of the 12, there are 4 available with in the complex and others are little away from the main area. One of the troughs is at the top of the hill and still holds water in all the seasons.
Thotlakonda is named after the tubs on this hill. In the local language, Thotti stands for tub and Konda stands for hills.
The hill top gives a magnificent view of the ocean and the curved coast line. Thotlakonda was identified as Hinayana Buddhist complex and Andhra Pradesh Tourism with the help of local municipality has taken up many development woks to promote this place into a tourism map of Andhra Pradesh.
Mangamaripeta is located between Vizag and Bheemili. It is well connected by road. It is advised to use private transportation to this tourist spot.
